Air Travel and Environmental Pollution
IELTS Essay Sample: Writing Task 2
Do you agree or disagree?
Travelling by plane is without doubt the most preferable means of transport for long distances nowadays. It is not only comfortable and fast, but also cheap. These are the main reasons why it is accessible to many people, despite its drawbacks such as pollution and loud noise.
On the one hand, air crafts contaminate the air far more than a car or a bus, but that is understandable considering the size. Another problem of crucial importance that these vehicles cause is deafening noise they produce. This, in all probability, leaves the areas around airports either not habitable or a bad choice to buy house in. That's why some people insist on decreasing the level of air traffic. A possible solution could be if governments interfere and raise the cost of passenger flights.
On the other hand, by taking these measures, air travel instantly turns into a luxury that only well-to-do people can afford. It is also quite conceivable that many aspects in our society will be affected, such as trade between long - distance countries and tourism. Although this is a restriction for people who want to explore the world, I believe that many of them won't be stopped. They will simply find another way of travelling, which is likely to lead to pollution again, as well as congestions and irritated drivers.
In conclusion, air traffic is without question causing problems, but the way I see it, trying to solve them is like adding fuel to the fire and will only bring more trouble. Aircraft have become indispensable part of out lives and there is no turning back.
