Are non - academic subjects beneficial for the prospective university students?
IELTS Task 2 - sample essay
School subjects such as physical education and cookery are included in the syllabus, despite the fact that they are not studied later on academic level. Whether this is beneficial or more of a hindrance for the prospective university students is a matter of opinion.
On the one hand, non-academic subjects are meant to be amusing and appealing to youngsters. Bearing in mind that students have been put under pressure since elementary school, non-academic subjects are a good way to relieve stress. Even though some people consider these subjects worthless, they are actually preparing kids for real life situations. What is the point of knowing how the Universe works when you can't cook a proper meal? Needless to say that physical education and sports are important for every growing up child's health and physical shape.
On the other hand, education is becoming more and more demanding. Children are pressured to decide what they want to be when they grow up despite the fact that they are still knee high. For that reason non-academic subjects will be of no avail for pursuing a career.
On balance, if school subjects are entirely focused on serious matter it is quite conceivable that it will help students in their academic education. Regardless of that fact, I hold the view that school shouldn't turn into a place where we only study how to do our jobs in the future.
