Natural disasters - Sample IELTS essay
Writing Task 2
When a disaster, such as an earthquake or flood happens, media spread the news like wildfire. Such natural hazards have always been grabbing the attention of the public. But are they the real risk?
First of all, natural disasters are, to all appearances, powerful and exciting to watch to some extent. They ruin infrastructure of cities, cause chaos among citizens and usually have devastating consequences. For one reason or another, a lot of attention is paid to them even if they haven't taken any lives.
On the other hand, there are accidents that take far more human lives, but are not that 'viral' ti be discussed by the media. As opposed to disasters, accidents on the road, for instance, happen regularly. Each and every day there are people who die from diseases, violent criminals or even unlucky accidents at home.
One of the main reasons for this is the fact that most people simply don't know how to react when such things happen. They have no idea how to properly secure their home, who to call when they see a crime and how to drive safely.
In my view, people need to be better educated about the real risks their surroundings hide and the ways they can be prevented. Although natural hazards cause a lot of damage, there is hardly anything we can do to prevent them. We should better concentrate on the risks that our everyday lives face us with.
