Advantages and disadvantages of rural life

(Advantages and Disadvantages of Living in a City and in the Countryside)

Nowadays a lot of villages are desolate and underpopulated due to the fact that most people are not attracted by rural life and prefer to live in towns.

Unlike the industrial cities, where people are exposed to pollution, noise and stress, villages are ideal places where you can breathe clean air, drink uncontaminated water and relieve your tension. There, you have the opportunity to grow vegetables and fruit, breed sheep, cows, chickens and other animal. Thus you can not only enjoy fresh food but also spend less money on it, while in towns you have to put aside a great deal of your income for maintenance.

Another advantage of rural life is the fact that crime rate is much lower and the people there live in safety.
But, along all these positive sites, living in a village has a lot of negative aspects, as well. For example, if we are talking about a village in my country, there are no theatres, no cinemas nor other places of interest, where young people can spend their free time. The lack of newspapers, satellite and cable television deprives you of information about the world, which doesn't sound very attractive in the century of advancing communications and technology.

An essential problem in many villages is that they cannot provide proper education for young people who want to study. There is either one primary school or, in some villages, there are even no schools, to say nothing of universities. That is why rural life cannot give many chances for intellectual development.
Another point is that in a village, you cannot make a lot of acquaintances, because the number of people living there is small and you know almost everybody by face and by name. That makes the spreading of gossip easier and you have to be careful about what you are doing.

Of course, I realize that to a person, who is tired of the strenuous life in a town, living in a village can give peace and tranquility, but for a young person it is no real challenge.
